Liver Support 101: Daily Habits That Make a Difference
Simple daily practices and foods to support one of your body’s hardest-working organs
Think of your liver as your body’s in-house cleaning crew, hormone regulator, and energy support team—all rolled into one.
It’s filtering, transforming, and packaging up waste products like bacterial toxins, excess hormones, heavy metals, mold, and pesticides to keep your system running smoothly every day.
But when the liver gets overwhelmed or isn’t functioning optimally, it can impact far more than detox. It touches nearly every aspect of your health—from digestion and hormone balance to energy, metabolism, and mood.
How Your Liver Impacts Your Health
Your liver is involved in an extensive range of essential functions that keep your body running smoothly. This makes it one of the most vital and versatile organs in your body. Here are just a few of its daily tasks:
Filtering toxins and waste from the bloodstream
Regulating hormones and neurotransmitters
Supporting digestion and bile production
Storing and releasing vitamins and minerals
Producing enzymes for various metabolic processes
Balancing blood sugar levels
Regulating fat storage
Manufacturing new body proteins
Metabolizing alcohol
Producing immune factors
Regenerating its own damaged tissue
When your liver is under stress or isn’t functioning optimally, these processes can be affected—sometimes subtly, sometimes significantly. Over time, that can show up as fatigue, hormonal imbalances, poor digestion, skin issues, and more.
Signs Your Liver Might Need a Little TLC
You don’t need to be dealing with liver disease to experience the effects of an overburdened liver. Here are some common signs it may need extra support:
Headaches or migraines
Bloating or constipation
Weight loss resistance
High cholesterol
Allergies
Diabetes
Hypertension
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Infertility
Why Your Liver Might Be Overwhelmed
Every day, our liver is bombarded by:
Environmental toxins
Pesticides and heavy metals
Mold exposure
Ultra-processed foods
Alcohol and excess sugar
Hormonal imbalances
Poor sleep and chronic stress
Even with all this, the liver is incredibly resilient. The good news? There’s so much you can do to support it naturally—starting with a few simple daily swaps.
Daily Habits to Love Your Liver
Supporting your liver doesn’t have to be complicated. These simple practices can make a big difference over time:
✅ Choose organic whenever possible
✅ Drink filtered water daily
✅ Swap non-stick cookware for safer options (like stainless steel or cast iron)
✅ Reduce plastic use—opt for glass, stainless steel, or wood instead
✅ Move your body and sweat (exercise, sauna, hot baths)
✅ Support healthy bowel movements (fiber, hydration, regular meals)
✅ Eat liver-supportive foods consistently
Foods That Fuel Liver Detox
Your liver relies on key nutrients like vitamin C, zinc, selenium, and magnesium to carry out its two-phase detoxification process. Including these nutrient-rich foods in your meals can help your liver do its job more efficiently and reduce your overall toxic load.
Here are some of my favorites:
🍋 Lemon peel – Rich in limonene, which supports detox enzymes
🍃 Green tea – Loaded with catechins, powerful antioxidants for liver health
🥦 Cruciferous vegetables – (Broccoli, sprouts, arugula, cabbage, etc.) help boost glutathione, your body’s master detox antioxidant
🍓 Vitamin C foods – Oranges, papaya, kiwi, bell peppers, blackcurrants, rosehip, strawberries
🍤 Zinc-rich foods – Oysters, oats, pumpkin seeds, cashews, hemp seeds
🍳 Selenium-rich foods – Brazil nuts (just 2-3 per day!), beef liver, brown rice, eggs, sardines
🥑 Magnesium-rich foods – Avocado, almonds, dark chocolate, spinach, pumpkin seeds
A Little Daily Love Goes a Long Way
Caring for your liver doesn’t require a 7-day juice cleanse or harsh detoxes. In fact, the most powerful support comes from the everyday choices you make—what you eat, drink, breathe, and how you move.
Supporting your liver is a key step toward better energy, clearer skin, balanced hormones, and a stronger, more resilient you.

In case you missed my previous Wholesome Wednesday article:
Is Your Body Producing Enough Enzymes?
Enzymes are the unsung heroes of our bodies, quietly working behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. These tiny protein molecules act as catalysts for over 25,000 processes in the body, helping to break down food, absorb nutrients, and even support metabolic functions.

Karina, do you have any perspectives on liver health and sea veg?
I love the darn stuff--season food with dulse flakes, snack on nori, sprinkle kelp (occasionally) instead of or in addition to sea salt.
I just never know how much is too much.
A great read, Karina! It is amazing how our bodies naturally go through cycles of detoxing like sweating in the sauna or during a hard workout. I have greatly enjoying going into the sauna a couple times a week after a workout and have felt great!
